But here’s the real twist: six years on, the project has gained a fresh lease of relevance by dint of it connection to new Disney+/Marvel series WandaVision. Amid the biff and the pows, he’d sprinkled in great fistfuls of Mills & Boon, essentially. To many fans, Whedon had done the unthinkable by cooking up a romance between Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Mark Ruffalo’s Incredible Hulk. Avengers: Age of Ultron, released four days previously, had made landfall and was proving instantly divisive. The answer was at that very moment playing to packed multiplexes across the globe. On May 5, 2015, Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and custodian of Marvel’s Avengers franchise, deleted his twitter account. “Thank you to all the people who've been so kind and funny and inspiring up in here,” he had written to his 1.14 million followers.
